Update 4 years later: a friend of mine managed to completely lose all their photos on their macbook due to a bad hard drive, and also had a non-functional external backup. Luckily they also had all their photos synced to an iPad, and I was able to use phoneview to recover them.
(but really you should all get backblaze.)
